제76주년 제주4·3희생자 미주 추념식이 오는 4월 27일 토요일 오후 5시 브룩클라인 소재 보스턴한인교회에서 개최된다. 이번 행사는 “한류를 넘어, 역사를 마주하다”라는 주제 아래 제주4·3 사건에 대한 역사적 이해를 높이고 희생자들을 추모하며, 현재까지도 이어지는 사건의 영향과 집단 트라우마와의 관계에 대해 탐구하는데 중점을 둔다.
1947년부터 1954년까지 7년간 지속된 제주4·3사건은 전시가 아닌 상황에서 발생한 3만 여명의 민간인 희생자를 낸 한국 현대사의 비극이다. 이는 한국 사회에 지속적인 상처로 남아 있으며, 한국에서 집단 트라우마(끔찍한 사건을 경험한 집단이 공유하는 깊은 심리적 상처)의 대표적인 사례로 꼽힌다.
이번 추념식에서는 남녀노소 누구나 참여할 수 있는 다채로운 문화교육 행사도 함께 열린다. 고등학생 대상 제주4·3 에세이 공모 (마감: 5월 30일, 하단의 안내 참고), 제주4·3을 상징하는 꽃인 동백꽃을 소재로 뉴잉글랜드한국학교 학생들의 동백꽃 수묵화 전시회, 시민참여 예술단 '동백의 향기'가 마련한 동백꽃 비누 만들기 공예 체험 등이 예정되어 있다.
재미 제주4·3기념사업회·유족회의 양수연 대표는 “한류는 한국 역사의 더 깊은 층위를 탐구할 수 있는 맥락을 제공한다. 제주 4·3사건은 동북아 냉전의 시발점이었으며, 전 세계 학자들과 학생들의 관심과 연구가 크게 고조되고 있다.”고 말했다.
대한민국 정부는 4월 3일을 국가기념일로 정하고 매년 제주 4·3평화공원에서 제주 4·3희생자추념식을 거행하고 있다. 최근에는 제주4·3기록물이 유네스코 세계기록유산 등재 대상에 최종 선정되기도 했다.
미국에서는 2021년 재미제주4·3기념사업회·유족회가 설립되어 매년 4월 제주4·3희생자 미주 추념식을 개최하고 있다. 이번 76회 추념식을 통해 제주4·3사건의 역사적 중요성을 배우고, 희생자들을 기리며, 집단적 트라우마에 대한 공감, 기억, 치유의 중요성을 성찰할 수 있는 기회를 갖기를 바란다. 남녀노소 누구나 무료로 참여할 수 있으며 행사는 영어로 진행하나 한국어 안내가 준비되어 있다. 행사 후 리셉션 디너가 예정되어 있으며 주최측은 RSVP를 기다리고 있다.
